Neptune in Pisces: The Season Nothing Felt Real

There's a particular flavor of vertigo that comes from living through history while suspecting you're being lied to about whether it's actually happening. That's Neptune in Pisces. Thirteen years underwater, and somewhere around year three, most of us stopped being sure which way was up.

Neptune touched Pisces first in April 2011, wobbled back into Aquarius, and settled in for good on February 3, 2012. It held that ground until March 30, 2025. This is Neptune at home — in its own sign, running at full strength, doing the thing it does best: dissolving the line between the real and the imagined until most people stop being able to find it. We're not far enough from this one to call it history yet. We're still pulling ourselves out of the water.

When The Ground Stopped Being Solid

Pisces doesn't argue with you. It just quietly removes the floor. Somewhere in the middle of this transit, in the early months of 2020, the entire planet got a crash course in what that feels like at civilizational scale — lockdown, a virus nobody could see, a collective grief so large it never got properly named, and a sudden redefinition of what "normal" even meant. We learned to attend funerals through a screen. We learned that six feet and a piece of cloth were supposed to be enough to keep the unimaginable at bay. Time itself got strange — days looped, weeks disappeared, and an entire generation came out the other side describing 2020 the way you'd describe a fever dream you can't quite place on a calendar.

That's not incidental to a Neptune-in-Pisces season. That is the season, doing exactly what it does — just at a scale none of us had a frame for.

Neptune in Pisces: the Dream becomes a Nightmare

A Reality You Could No Longer Verify

Then the ground didn't just disappear — it started actively lying to us. Deepfakes went from a novelty to a genuine epistemic threat within a few short years, to the point where video evidence, once the gold standard of "this actually happened," became just another thing you had to interrogate before believing. AI-generated images flooded the same feeds where real atrocities and real triumphs were also being posted, and most people lost any reliable way to tell them apart on sight.

Layer onto that a political decade that felt engineered to disorient: Donald Trump elected in 2016, a presidency that felt to many like a fever dream itself, January 6, 2021 unfolding live on television in a way that genuinely didn't look real even as it was happening, and then Trump elected again in 2024 under circumstances that left an enormous number of people — across very different parts of the political spectrum, for very different reasons — unable to fully believe or trust the result. We're not here to adjudicate that. We're here to name what it did to the collective nervous system: an entire country, watching its own history happen, and quietly asking itself, "wait, is this actually what's going on?" That question, asked by millions of people at once about their own reality, is about as pure a distillation of Neptune in Pisces as astrology gets. It's the Bobby Ewing shower scene played out at the scale of a nation — years of lived experience that huge swaths of us have quietly wondered if we're allowed to trust.

Chemical And Cultural Escape Hatches

Pisces rules dissolution, and this season gave us no shortage of ways to dissolve. Microdosing went from underground biohacker secret to dinner party small talk, sold everywhere from psychedelic-assisted therapy clinics to office break rooms, as an entire culture searched for a chemical bridge back to feeling something real. Psilocybin and ketamine therapy moved into mainstream mental health treatment for the first time in decades. And on the darker edge of that same impulse, a fentanyl crisis tore through communities with a brutality that made clear Neptune's dissolving hand doesn't only reach for the willing.

Meanwhile, the algorithm perfected its own version of escapism — infinite scroll, personalized realities tailored so precisely to what would keep each of us watching that two people scrolling the same platform could end up believing they lived in entirely different worlds. Spiritual bypassing had its biggest decade yet too, as "just raise your vibration" became a socially acceptable way to avoid looking directly at any of this.

What Was Actually Real

  • An mRNA vaccine, designed and deployed in under a year — a genuine scientific miracle, whatever else got tangled up around it
  • A global reckoning on racial justice in 2020 that moved policy, institutions, and public conversation in ways that outlasted the news cycle
  • Mutual aid networks that fed, sheltered, and checked in on neighbors when official systems couldn't or wouldn't
  • Marriage equality and LGBTQ+ protections expanding into more countries than at any prior point in history
  • The James Webb Space Telescope returning images of the actual, literal, unfiltered universe — real light, from real stars, older than language
  • Psychedelic-assisted therapy earning legitimate clinical recognition after fifty years of prohibition
  • A generation openly talking about mental health, therapy, and trauma in ways their parents never had permission to

The Dream Before This One

If Pisces was the season of losing the shoreline, what came before it was the opposite kind of dream — networked, wired, convinced that connecting everyone would set us all free. Next in this series: Neptune in Aquarius, the fourteen years that gave us the early internet's utopian promise, the indigo children, and a spiritual culture that genuinely believed enlightenment could go viral.
