Grimoires

The word Grimoire comes from the French word ‘grammaire’ (grammar in English). But the root word of ‘grammaire’ is Latin, meaning ‘teaching book’ and that’s really the first perspective one should have of their own grimoire or magic journal – is what can it teach me.

Some people call a grimoire a book of spells or a book of shadows. The name you choose is less important than the purpose of the book, which is to chart your progress as you work magic and ascend to your own highest and most divine self. In that sense, it is a history book and you can look back at any phase or phases and see your progress.

There are many types of grimoires or journals that you can use. There are some that are specifically published and printed as grimoires or books of shadows. You can also buy simple journals, or even binders. You can use digital journals and some people make their own handmade journals and notebooks. Whatever feels right to you.

You can use any implements in your journal to record including gel pens, pencils, markers, calligraphy pens, and of course if you are keeping a digital grimoire you can use any font or style that you prefer.

The information recorded will consist of many different things here are example of just some of what you may record in your grimoire:

·         Sketches and symbols

·         Pasted in images

·         Meaningful Quotes

·         A recording of your dreams

·         A recording of your day’s activities

·         Memories that surface during your magical workings

·         Ancestors that come to mind

·         Spells that you rely upon especially for protection

·         An inventory of magic items and tools that you are using

·         Protective sigils

·         Recipes

·         Lists of steps toward magical workings and spells

·         Meditations and mantras

·         Personal writing

·         A list of sources and references so you know where to find what is most useful to you

·         Your opinions

·         Visions

·         Magical dates including astrological dates, moon phases, anniversaries and sabbats.

At the top right hand side, I write down the date, time, the day of the week and, using the symbol,  the planet that rules the day. I then note what sign the Sun is currently in, what sign the Moon is in and what phase the moon is in. Lastly, I write down the chakra aligned with that day, and if I am traveling that day, I’ll note where I’m recording this information.

One reason to do this is you’ll begin to notice patterns. You’ll notice that certain things happen during certain phases of the moon, or certain elements associated with the days of the week or the astrological signs. You’ll notice that your energy is different in different places and you may be getting different results or inspirations based on your location. You’ll notice that certain chakras trigger certain feelings or experiences, and even what time you are working your magic might reflect in the outcomes.

Beneath that information, I write down the rituals I began my workings with. That will include:

·         The Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram (including the Qabalistic Cross)

·         A purification ritual for my altar and sacred space

·         PRKT or Paroketh: the Rending of the Veil

·         The Six Rayed Star (a ritual taught by one of my teachers)

·         The intonation of my magical name

·         My Daily Magical Mantra (stay tuned – some of these rituals will be recorded at this site as videos for you to view and learn)

·         And any special rituals I am beginning with including smudging and spellwork

Once I have done my ritual work, I then sit down beside my altar. I select a crystal to use that day and I do a short meditation focused on the chakra of the day. I then pull a Tarot card and use both the card and the crystal to conduct a short reading for myself.

I write down this information and all observations I get as a result.

Additionally, if I am currently reading any particular books associated with my magic practice then I read a page or two and write down anything that seems significant or revelant particularly to that day’s working.

I end my ritual workings with the Solar Adorations (pertinent to the time of day), closing the Veil (PRKT), the Qabalastic Cross, and one more ritual (the intonation of LVX).

I also recommend for you a dream journal, and an astrological planner.

Your grimoires will evolve over time. They will reflect the patterns in your life. They will gain meaning. They will become more powerful. And so will you, by honoring your work and recording it, and occasionally by reading back through them.
