Magical Debt
I want you to think of all magicians as brothers and sisters, even those who work in fields of magic that are strange and unfamiliar and even dark to you. Each of us is navigating our own path and those paths do cross. When a dark path crosses a light one, there is transference and when a light path crosses a dark one, there is also transference. If you work in the light, you are going to affect those you encounter, hopefully in the most positive of ways.
I’ve talked often here about working with the elements in play – when you work with the existing energy (astrological, elemental, spiritual) you are bound to get better results of your magical workings. The more you know, the more useful you are.
Each day, you could ask out loud the question, “What honors my most magical self today” or “What does my most magical self require today?”
When we are guided not by self-serving means, we can best affect the change we desire. But remember two things:
What you put out comes back to you. Many wiccans and other practitioners believe in what is called the three-fold law: put out good, it comes back times three. Put out bad, it comes back to you times three. You must always be mindful that you are a conductor of energy and light. It will touch you, permeate your skin, impact potentially every aspect of your life, and can carry some consequences even if you are using magic wisely and responsibly.
What you don’t know is 400,000 times what you do know. That means that you may be affected by unseen elements and energies and entities and not understand that you have allowed them into your life and your being and they are affecting you and even the people around you.
While we can never fully protect ourselves from things coming in as long as we are magic, and frankly as long as we are human, there are things we can do to mitigate the damage.
Magical Debt comes when we leap before we look, act before we plan, and accept results without directing that energy appropriately. Don’t invoke things you don’t know about, or ask for results you’re not prepared to accept. Magic isn’t all light – we’ve talked about the light and darkness of working in this realm.
You are going to encounter dark and destructive, negative energy if you work in magic. Frankly, you will just by being a human being on this planet, and every one of us is magic, some of us just work at it more than others. Here is the tricky thing: you cannot destroy negative energy. Instead, you can only hope to release it and channel it into something useful. But you can also block negative energy from entering your force field. It’s the method with the best results of protecting yourself.
There will be darkness that permeates from outside yourself, from the world.
There may also be darkness that permeates from outside yourself, from the spirit world.
But there is also darkness that ascends from within. You are human. You are not divine. You are raising to meet your Higher Divine Genius. You do not become them in this life. That’s a whole other conversation. You raise to meet your Higher Divine Genius and your Best Self.
Magical Debt occurs when you overemphasize your role in making magic, and create consequences for yourself and others, particularly that which you don’t know how to manage.
To mitigate magical debt, you have to have an ethical and responsible magic practice, based on honesty and transparency. The best way to do that is to ask questions of the divine source before you begin your workings, and listen carefully (through dreams, meditation, etc) to the answers.
Ask where do I want to be?
Ask where am I in communion with the light?
Paths lead to fields. If you want to be a particular field, you have to ask which paths cross or lead to it?
Then you have to know those paths well enough to walk them directly. The more direct the path, the least transference and potential blowback.
Where am I strong?
Where am I less strong?
It is also important to be grounded, stable and somewhat neutral when working with magic and energy.
Best methods of grounding involve the Earth – she wants you to know she’s there. Go walk in a muddy field. Take your shoes off beside a river and roll up your cuffs. Earth is always going to be the most balancing and stabilizing element. She’s your home. She knows you well.
Then by Water.
Then by Air.
Then by Fire.
We cannot be in judgement of those stuck in matter even as we ascend to a position of matter and spirit meeting. Magical Debt can occur when we presume our own elevated status over those we work with and for.
Work respectfully with all tools, elements and guides. Magical debt occurs when you are lazy, sloppy, disorganized, and arbitrary with your tools.
To be a magical practitioner means to use my knowledge and intuition to work with resources as needed.
Say the words: I call upon the energies of pure light only. Magical debt can occur when we want to feel powerful, and instead we invite in the wrong energies for the work we do. That doesn’t mean it’s evil, but if it’s not effective, then it does more harm than good.
So, let’s talk about the ways that we protect ourselves, create balance in our energy and develop a self care practice that restores us when our energy is depleted.
