Mercury Retrograde Is Trying To Tell You Something (And You're Not Listening)

Mercury retrograde gets blamed for a lot. The broken phone. The missed email. The contract that fell apart at the last minute. The ex who texted out of nowhere. Travel chaos, technology meltdowns, conversations gone sideways — three or four times a year, for roughly three weeks at a stretch, Mercury appears to move backward through the sky and we collectively brace ourselves like we're about to drive through a hailstorm.

But here's what nobody tells you when they're warning you not to sign contracts or buy electronics: Mercury retrograde is not happening to you. It's happening for you. And what it's trying to teach you — if you'll slow down long enough to listen — is something you probably needed to hear anyway.

First, The Basics (Because Mercury Would Want Clarity)

Mercury doesn't actually move backward. No planet does. What we observe from Earth is an optical illusion created when Mercury, which orbits the Sun faster than we do, laps us and appears to reverse direction against the backdrop of the stars. It's the same effect you get when you're on a highway and a faster car passes you — for a moment, it looks like the slower cars are moving backward.

Three times a year, roughly, Mercury goes retrograde for about three weeks. Add a "shadow period" on either side — the two weeks before and after the station — and you're looking at nearly half the year spent in some kind of Mercury retrograde influence.

Which suggests that maybe this isn't a periodic disruption to navigate around. Maybe it's a recurring invitation you keep declining.

Mercury, in astrology, governs communication, thought, information, contracts, short-distance travel, technology, and the everyday transactions of life — the emails and conversations and decisions that make up the texture of an ordinary day. When it goes retrograde, all of those things slow down, glitch, get complicated, or demand revisiting.

The prefix re- is key. Retrograde periods are for re-thinking, re-viewing, re-connecting, re-vising. The universe is not crashing your system. It's running an update.

What Mercury Is Actually Teaching

Here's the thing about Mercury as an inner teacher: it specializes in the gap.

The gap between what you mean and what you say. Between what you said and what was heard. Between what you believe and what you've actually articulated, even to yourself. Between the story you've been telling about a situation and what's actually true about it when you look more carefully.

Mercury retrograde makes that gap visible. Often uncomfortably so.

The misfired text that causes a three-day misunderstanding? Mercury is showing you that something in that relationship has been going unsaid. The contract that needs renegotiating? Mercury is asking whether you read the fine print — not just in the document, but in the agreement itself. Was it actually right for you? The ex who surfaces? Mercury is less interested in rekindling anything and more interested in asking whether you ever said what you actually needed to say. Whether you ever heard what they were actually trying to tell you.

This is the lesson at the center of every Mercury retrograde, stated plainly: how well are you actually communicating?

With other people, yes. But more pointedly — with yourself.

The Three Conversations Mercury Wants You To Have

The one you've been postponing.

You know the one. The conversation you've been rehearsing in the shower for six weeks. The thing you need to say to your partner, your parent, your boss, your friend — or the thing you need to stop saying and actually mean it. Mercury retrograde brings these to the surface not to punish you but because they've been sitting there creating static. Say the thing. Or at the very least, write it down and figure out why you haven't.

The one you think you already had.

Sometimes the communication issue isn't that something went unsaid — it's that two people had completely different conversations while sharing the same words. Mercury retrograde is an excellent time to revisit assumptions. What did you actually agree to? What did they actually mean? What have you been operating on that was never explicitly stated? Go back and check. Gently, curiously — not accusatorially. You might find that a lot of friction in your life is living in this space.

The one you're having with yourself.

This is the one Mercury cares about most. The internal monologue. The story you tell yourself about who you are, what you're capable of, why things keep happening to you. Mercury retrograde, with its enforced slowdowns and communication tangles, has a way of making you sit still long enough to actually hear yourself think. Use it. Journal. Talk out loud to no one. Notice what thoughts keep circling. There's information in the loop.

A Note On The Technology

Yes, things break during Mercury retrograde. Computers crash. Phones die. The app glitches at the worst possible moment.

Take this as data.

When a piece of technology fails during Mercury retrograde, the first question isn't "how do I fix this?" It's "what was this technology helping me avoid?"

The email you were about to send before your phone died — did you actually want to send it? The meeting that got eaten by a Zoom malfunction — were you fully prepared, or were you going through the motions? The GPS that led you down the wrong road — were you paying attention, or were you somewhere else entirely?

Mercury retrograde makes the invisible visible. Sometimes that takes the form of a glitch. The glitch is pointing at something.

How To Work With This Energy Instead Of Against It

Mercury retrograde rewards certain behaviors and makes others genuinely painful. Here's a quick field guide:

Slow down before you send. Read it again. Is that what you mean? Is this the right time? Is this the right channel — should it be a conversation rather than a text?

Revisit rather than initiate. This is not the ideal time to launch something new that depends on clear communication and clean contracts. It is an excellent time to return to something unfinished — the project you shelved, the relationship you drifted from, the idea you didn't fully develop.

Back up your files. This is also just good advice in general, but especially now.

Leave earlier. For everything. Travel goes sideways during Mercury retrograde with remarkable consistency. The ten-minute buffer is your friend.

Listen more than you speak. The retrograde period favors reception over transmission. What are you hearing that you normally tune out? What is someone trying to tell you that you keep not quite catching?

Write things down. Mercury rules writing, and retrograde periods are unusually productive for journaling, editing, revisiting old work, and getting thoughts onto paper that have been circling in your head without resolution.

The Messenger's Real Message

Mercury is the planet of the messenger — in Roman mythology, the quick-footed god who moved between worlds, carrying information from the divine to the human and back again. In retrograde, the messenger slows down. Turns around. Looks back at the road already traveled.

This is not a malfunction. This is a different kind of delivery.

The messages that come during Mercury retrograde are not the fast ones — not the instant reply, the hot take, the rapid-fire group chat. They are the slower ones. The ones that needed time to form. The realizations that arrive after the conversation is over and you're lying in the dark replaying it. The letter you write but don't send. The journal entry that surprises you. The phone call that goes longer than expected because something real finally surfaces.

Mercury retrograde is the universe asking you to be a better communicator. Not a faster one. Not a more strategic one. A more honest one.

The messenger has been circling back to you with the same letter for years, probably. Different words, different situations, same underlying message.

Maybe this is the retrograde you finally read it.

Before The Next Planet

Each retrograde in this series has something specific to teach. Mercury's lesson is about clarity — the kind that comes not from talking more but from listening better, to others and to yourself.

As we move through this series, the lessons get deeper, slower, and more inward. Venus retrograde, coming next, takes the communication question and turns it toward something more tender: the way we give and receive love, and what we've been getting wrong about our own worth.
