Crystals
Crystals are ambassadors of the five elements; earth, air, fire, water and spirit, and they make themselves available to us in order to serve the work we do. You will be drawn to certain types of crystals, certain colors and shapes, certain uses for your crystals. You’ll purchase them from local shops and from online merchants, and they will arrive at your doorstep from literally every corner of the world.
But in order for crystals to be most effective, you need to properly care for them. This blog is going to talk about the care of crystals including cleansing them, charging them, and consecrating them.
Crystals go through many different stages in development, and once they are complete, they may be removed from the earth and made available for purchase and use. Many many hands will touch those crystals, but just the process of wrenching the crystal from the ground in which it grew creates a minor wound that must be addressed. Then, the crystal will pass through many hands, some of whom will alter and redesign the crystal in order to make it more marketable. It will travel great distances, at unavoidable costs upon the planet. It may get chipped or damaged during transit. It may pass through hands with less than honorable intentions. It may touch people, places and things that are damaged or dark.
So, when you get a crystal home, it needs to be cleansed. Most crystals can be gently cleansed under running room temperature water, but some cannot come into contact with water at all. Crystals are each associated with one or more elements and you’ll be able to use those elements to determine the best methods for cleansing and charging those stones.
My suggestion: When you first get a crystal home, let it sit a while. Perhaps a few days or even a week. Have a small box handy that you can place any of your crystals in when you first receive them, and then set them in a location in or outside of your home where they will be safe. (All of your magical tools in fact should take up space at your altar for a while before you consecrate and then use them). This gives them a chance to ‘breathe’ and settle in, to recognize the energy of your space and to begin to understand the role they will play in your life. You’ll need to place them somewhere where they are not exposed to the elements since some crystals can be damaged by water, by sunlight, etc.
The crystals that should not be exposed to water include Tangerine Quartz, Aragonite and Blue Aragonite, Malachite, Hematite, Pyrite, Bismuth, Peach Selenite and Selenite, Chrysacolla and Chalcopyrite
Those that should not be placed in sunlight include citrine.
Crystals that are AIR element can be cleansed and or charged with smudging, sound baths, feathers or fans.
Those what are EARTH element can be cleansed and charged by placing in soil or near plants, on a bed of herbs or salt, or with other stones like selenite that are self-charging.
Those that are FIRE element can be hovered over candlelight or placed in sunlight for 20-30 minutes.
Those that are SPIRIT element can be charged through affirmations, on geometric patterns like the wood mandala that I have, through reiki or other energy healing, in your sacred places such as altars, churches and temples, or through specific rituals like the Violet Flame Visualization.
And crystals that are WATER element can be placed in any form of water including creeks and streams, in snow, in gently running water, or in moonlight.
When you use your crystals, you also need to regularly recharge them. Have a monthly lunar ritual for instance, or charge your crystals weekly. It’s up to you what feels right and best to do.
Consecrating a crystal: Not all crystals need to be consecrated. This is intended only for your most special crystal tools such as wands, and touchstones. Most magicians will only have a small number of consecrated stones, often for specific purposes such as specific rites and ceremonies or meditations.
To consecrate your stones, they must first be cleansed but not charged.
Here are some methods that you may find useful:
Step 1:
Find a quite place where you will not be disturbed.
Step 2:
Take your crystal in both hands and hold it up in front of you just above eye level.
Step 3:
While looking at your crystal say the following or similar words out loud or in your head:
“I dedicate this crystal to the original Creator Source. May it serve and only serve my highest and greatest good and the highest and greatest good of all”
Or, place it on an altar (perhaps an ancestral altar if it is intended to be used during healing rituals involving others) and make an offering of food, drink, spirits and place the crystal upon the offering.
Talk to your spirit guides and / or archangels and ask them for advice. They may offer a simple ritual to consecrate your crystal in dreams perhaps.
Once a crystal is consecrated, it never needs to be recharged or reconsecrated unless something really drastic happens to it (something energetically that minimizes its power and effect)
