Intuition
The Element of Spirit isn’t associated with any of the astrological signs, the seasons, the specific quadrants of the Mystery Tradition, and yet it’s associated with all of them in its way. Spirit, also known as Aether, is defined as the most powerful of the elements, and the most elusive. Spirit is immaterial, yet present in all things. It can be invoked even when we are not aware of it. The symbol is the Spirit Wheel, which you see here and it is sometimes also referred to as Akasha, a Sanskrit word translating roughly as “space” or “atmosphere.”
In more practical terms, Spirit is the Divine Source, the creator of the Universe. Spirit is also the Archangels, the Ascended Masters, your Ancestors, your Spirit Guides, the Deities and Devas, the Angelic Choirs and Mundane Chakras.
That may sound really out there if you’re coming from a Judeo-Christian belief system, so I’ll sum this up: Spirit is God. God in all its forms. My practice may invoke ancient Egyptian rites, Neoplatonic philosophies, Rosicrucian teachings and other esoteric practices but at its heart, it is the same belief system and the same Higher Spirit that Christians, Jews, Muslims and others believe.
Let’s talk about some specific Spirit rituals:
Prayer: When we pray, we are asking for something: relief from pain, clarity in our decisions, validation that we are not alone, confirmation that we’re on the right path. Most people pray in some form or fashion. It is usually to God, sometimes to others – like our ancestors. Please help me recover from this illness. Please lessen my grief. Please tell me which of these options I should choose. Please give me strength.
Meditation: Meditation is the act of listening, in an intentional and purposeful way. We position ourselves in a receptive position – often with legs crossed but hands or arms open, our spine erect. We are still hoping for something – peace, clarity, wisdom – but not specifically asking for it during meditation. When meditating in a peaceful and open way, it is typical to receive some kind of answers to the questions we would ask in that moment.
Dreaming: During the different stages of sleep, our brain and consciousness relax enough to where we begin to experience light or lucid dreaming. During dreams, we may experience familiar situations and people, we might confront our personal demons, we may see things that are unworldly and unnatural and inexplicable. Some people remember their dreams, many do not. Some people can control or direct their dreams, most cannot.
So prayer is us asking, meditation is us listening, and dreams are us experiencing.
During each of these spiritual practices, however, what we are really doing is fine-tuning our intuition. Defined as, “The ability to understand something immediately, without the need for conscious reasoning”, Intuition is what you use to understand what is happening around you and to you, determine what options are available to move you forward, weigh those decisions, and ultimately make the best ones for you.
At its most elevated state, Intuition is the pathway to divinity. Meaning, that more intuitive you are, the more enlightened you are, and the more enlightened you are, the closer to God or Spirit you are.
All magical practices, all rituals and ceremonies, all readings and routines, all studies and relationships that we seek in magical work can be described as developing intuition. Working with crystals, chanting, cleansing space, invoking energy. The common denominator is that we all want to be wiser, clearer, stronger, surer, safer, more powerful, more intelligent, more joyful, more blessed, and more ourselves. Intuition is the process of achieving all of these and ascending to our highest divine genius.
So, we talk about Intuition when discussing the element of Spirit because it is working with our chosen spirits that we slowly, over many many years, develop that Intuition.
Of the three modalities that I mentioned earlier – prayer, meditation and dreams – I want to focus on dreams. Because if spirit is going to speak to someone who has not already refined and enhanced their intuition, that’s likely where it will happen.
Before you go to sleep tonight, I want you to place a notepad and pen beside your bed. Before you drift to sleep, get into a really comfortable and relaxed position and say to yourself, “I wish to remember my dreams” and when you wake in the morning, write down anything you do remember. It doesn’t matter if it’s just a flash of something – someone’s face or an object that sits in your office – or one scene of a dream or one small dream of several that you had that night. Whatever you do remember, write down. Maybe you just remember that it had something to do with your dad, or there was a lot of noise in the dream, or you remember the colors blue and yellow - whatever you recall, scribble it down.
Intuition is a muscle. The more we work it, the stronger it becomes. Don’t be surprised if once you start journaling your dreams, that you start remembering them more and more. And eventually, you’ll start to understand them better over time as well.
