Sacred Geometry
Geometry, or ‘earth measurement’ as the translation from Greek indicates, is really the field of knowledge dealing with spatial relationships. Revolutionized by Euclid, who introduced the rigid methodologies we continue to use today, Geometry is where many of us first learned about ‘Dimension’ or the concepts of metric space. Sacred Geometry ascribes symbolic and divine meanings to certain geometric shapes and proportions. It is associated with the belief that a God or Creator is the geometer (center) of the world.
Regardless of your personal spiritual practices, we in the magical world continue to ascribe this centric view of higher beings. For pagans, the Earth is their center whereas for those of the Christian/Judaic/Muslim faiths, God the Father is their geometric center.
Sacred Geometry also references our search for meaning using shapes and patterns and even the spaces between objects.
Sacred geometric patterns exist all around us, and can be broken down into a language of mathematics that reveals the nature of our visible and invisible world. Sacred Geometry is a blueprint of creation, and identifies how we unify all things to the Divine Source. Snowflakes, flower petals, shells, our galaxy, and all life forms are created out of geometric codes. When we study them, they can reveal deep wisdom and even clues to the creation of life itself. When we work with sacred geometry, our connection to spirit is amplified and our codes to inner harmony can be unlocked.
Each of us has a lightbody – a gridwork of light and sacred geometry that stitches together your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual self. This body radiates light and connects you to the lightbodies of others throughout the universe. We have talked before about the Merkaba – which means chariot of the soul in Hebrew – and how it connects both ancient Judaic and Egyptian metaphysic and mystical practices. The symbol of Merkaba, a star, is believed to be a divine vehicle made entirely of light and designed to connect or transport the spirit and body to higher realms. You will often find crystals shaped as Merkabas which are excellent to use in realigning your own light body frequency.
You’ll also find crystal sets shaped as the Platonic Solids – the sacred geometry building blocks of the Universe. They include the tetrahedron, hexahedron, octahedron, dodecahedron and icosahedron. But the most powerful symbol is the triangle - hence the power of the Merkaba which is made up of three triangles, and other less obvious forms.
The Platonic Solids are named after the ancient Greek philosopher Plato, who said each of these shapes corresponds with one of the elements: earth, fire, air, water, and ether. Platonic Solids are congruent; have equal sides and angles and have the same number of faces that meet at the vertices. The Platonic Solids are like the building blocks upon which organic matter and life are constructed. We find good examples of this in nature, art, music, and language.
Literally, everything in the world can be traced to these shapes in one form or another: from the flowers and trees to human DNA and cell structure. Sacred spaces such as mosques and temples are also created using these patterns. It is even believed that these shapes hold the power to open communication channels to Source.
Tetrahedron: The tetrahedron is a three-dimensional symbol of balance and stability as each side is flat no matter how it is turned. It represents the element of fire and creates a natural balance between the physical and spiritual. It corresponds with the Solar Plexus Chakra. An example of a tetrahedron is a pyramid in Egypt, as well as citrine, agates, and hematite (crystals that have a trigonal structure).
Hexahedron: The hexahedron, or cube, is a three-dimensional symbol of grounding energy and focus. It connects you to the energies of Earth and nature, and sits flat, thus firmly rooted wherever it is planted. The cube is associated with the element of earth and corresponds with the Root Chakra. Examples of the hexahedron structure in crystals are aquamarine, apatite, and sugilite.
Octahedron: The octahedron is a three-dimensional, self-reflecting shape and is represented by the element of air. It is linked to the Heart Chakra, the center for love and compassion. Through the octahedron, we attune to the spiritual nature of self. Examples of crystals that have an octahedral structure are grossular garnet, fluorite, and magnetite.
Icosahedron: Icosahedron is a three-dimensional symbol that encourages us to go with the flow, allowing for creativity and expression to flow effortlessly. It is associated with the element of water and corresponds to the Sacral Chakra. Through the icosahedron, we allow freedom of expression and the removal of emotional blockages that hold us back. The icosahedron does not naturally occur in crystals.
Dodecahedron: The dodecahedron is a three-dimensional symbol that reminds us of our ability to go beyond the physical body to reconnect with the higher resonance of our true nature. It is associated with the element of ether (spirit) and corresponds to the Higher Chakras — the Third Eye, Crown, and above. The dodecahedron shape does not naturally occur in crystals.
Other Shapes
TRIANGLE: The platonic solids are thought of as the sacred geometry ‘building blocks’ of the Universe that were taught in the Greek Mystery Schools 2,500 years ago (these are tetrahedron, hexahedron, octahedron, dodecahedron & icosahedron). But the triangle is a symbol that underlies all of them. Triangle symbolizes balance, harmony, completion. Rising upwards, it elevates us to Higher Consciousness.
CIRCLE: Wholeness, oneness, never-ending circle/cycles of life, the eternal constant, cycles of change, unity, perfection, inclusive, boundaries. It is said the first thought of God is represented by a circle, which exists by itself (and then it created a replica of itself.
SQUARE: Foundations, solidity, grounding, practical, ‘earthly’, stability, dependability, safety. The base of a pyramid (which creates the balance/stability).
SPIRAL: The Fibonacci and Golden Mean Ratio (all shapes come back to this mathematical formula). ‘As above, so below’, connects heaven and earth. The spiral ‘spirals’ up to connect the physical self to the Higher Self, and all levels of our being (inter-dimensionally) and into the core of the Earth. Galaxies are in spirals of energy. Energy moves in spirals. The spiral is also the kundalini, which is symbolic of raising one’s consciousness on the path of the evolution of the soul. The spiral is connected to the flow of energy through the chakras as they spin in a circle. The spiral is the spiral shape as a double helix in the DNA of each cell.
According to the Golden Mean (phi or the Golden Ratio), everything has the ability to divide and subdivide. The Golden Mean is a mathematical law that represents Infinity. According to the Golden Mean, every part relates to another part and can continue to divide and subdivide for eternity. An example of this is a fertilized egg. Initially starting out as a single organism, that cell, once fertilized, divides itself then subdivides and continues to do so until the result is a human baby. This principle of division and subdivision can be seen throughout all of nature. Every organism, creature, and human being is founded upon and organized by the principle of the Golden Mean.
CROSS (2 LINES): The intersection of the 2 lines is where ‘heaven and earth’ meet, and the result of their union is mankind (symbolized by the cross).
FLOWER OF LIFE CONTAINS THE SEED OF LIFE: The Flower of Life is a physical representation of the connection with all living things in the universe. It is considered a sacred symbol universally, and said to also contain within it the ‘blue print of creation’, the ‘building blocks’ of the universe – which we call the “Platonic Solids”. These are templates through which the foundation of life can be expressed. The Greek Mystery Schools 2,500 years ago taught that there were five perfect 3D forms – the tetrahedron, hexahedron, octahedron, dodecahedron, and icosahedron. These Platonic Solids are considered the foundation of everything in the physical world, revealing the unity in all things. However, if you break these Platonic Solids down to their simplest forms, they form the triangle, square, circle, spiral, and straight line. These are the basic ‘sacred geometric shapes (above).’
PYRAMID (SPIRAL, TRIANGLE, AND SQUARE): The Pyramid contains the spiral, the golden mean ratio, the triangle and square. The pyramid contains the number of divinity, 3 (the 3 sides to each triangle) plus the number of mankind, 4 ( 4 sides of the square). It represents the relationships between Source & humanity. The Pyramid of Giza in Egypt was built to create the energy that facilitated connection with the spiritual realms. The top or apex of the pyramid represents the highest point of spiritual attainment, the body of the structure is the ‘journey’ or ascent to enlightenment, spiraling upwards. The pyramids were used for initiations, and in transporting to ‘other realms.’ They were used by the initiates to go through a kind of death and become ‘transformed’ or ‘reborn’. The merkabah is like two pyramids interlocking
STAR OF DAVID (OR MERKABAH IN ITS 2D FORM): The upward triangle is masculine, the downward triangle is feminine, the two merging in perfect harmony.
MERKABAH (INTERLOCKING TRIANGLES): All sacred symbols make up the Merkabah.
How to work with sacred geometry:
Meditation: You can connect to sacred geometric shapes anytime – not just sitting in meditation. As you go about your day, you can bring yourself back into the present moment and mindful awareness by observing and feeling the sacred geometric shapes that make up the world around us. This is a great reminder of the connection to all in life – people, objects, nature, everything.
Physical Movement And you can also use in them in a mindful movement meditation: You can dance, move or walk, in a spiral shape. You can walk a spiral labyrinth, or other labyrinths in the shapes and designs of the sacred geometric shapes.
You have heard of the Multiverse of course – well, sacred geometry is the mathematical formulas that serve as the foundation through which everything -including us – exists. So when we study and work with sacred geometry, we can affect healing and rebalancing and recalibrating of who and what we are which are divine beings living here an earthly, human life.
Crystal Grids The reason why geometry is so powerful in gridwork is that the individual crystals are not viewed as single entities but as a collection and again, as representative of the Earth, or our God, or whomever we place our faith in. It is the pattern and the space between that is most powerful, particularly as energy begins to flow through and around the patterns. Ultimately, through gridwork, you will find that certain crystals and stones and certain configurations seem more powerful to you. That is because you, too, are energy and therefore some energetic patterns may be more aligned with your energy than others.
Now, when creating a new grid, we begin by asking five questions:
What is the conflict that we want to resolve?
What grid configuration will be most helpful to the situation?
What chakras do the conflict align with?
What resolution do we seek?
What crystals and other tools will we use to find that resolution?
Conflict
The first question we pose in the formation of a crystal grid is what the conflict is that we wish to resolve. Any number of concerns may be addressed here such as:
· Gaining Clarity
· Feeling Empowered
· Taking A Leap Forward
· Healing a Wound
· Finding Love
· Overcoming Trauma
· Accomplishing a Mission
· Setting New Goals
The conflict may be one that you personally are dealing with, or it could be a problem that involves others. As a general principle, it is best to work magic on yourself and those who have given permission for you to do work with them. In other words, it is impolite and disrespectful to create a grid (or any other magical practice) on someone else without asking if they are okay with it. However, there are exceptions. If someone is harming themselves or others, it is acceptable to work a grid that binds them from continuing to hurt anyone. In the field that I practice, Resistance Magic, that extends to the powers that influence and control the world we live in. I regularly do gridwork with the intention of protecting innocent people from those who wield power in harmful ways.
The more specific your Conflict is, the more customized your gridwork will likely be and therefore, the more successful the outcome may be.
